Light Painting Q & A

What subjects can be light painted?

Virtually any three dimensional object of value, from small to tall, can be light painted. Typically only 1 view is photographed during a session. A person can be added to the image to make it even more personalized. Please advise during the consultation if this is of interest to you.

What steps are involved?

Call 815.216-1344 to schedule a convenient time to meet to discuss your ideas. This initial consultation can also be done on the phone. When you meet with Kathryn, she will find out what you are looking for and begin the planning of the photo shoot. If you have a special place in mind, she will schedule a time to come to the site with you to determine the setup, lighting and the best time to do the photography. A retainer of $250 is due at this time.

How long does the photo shoot take?

The time to create a light painting varies according to the size and complexity of the project, but usually it takes 2 – 4 hours to complete the light painting shoot. Typically starting before sunset, for outdoors subjects, for preliminary images – then lasting until after dark to finish the image creation.

In What form can my Light Painted Image be displayed?

Finished pieces are typically displayed on aluminum, or a high gloss metallic paper to compliment the sheen of the subject. For the discriminating client, there is an acrylic presentation. Museum acrylic that has hardly any glare, is non-scratch and dust resistant is applied over a metallic paper that creates a spectacular presentation.

How much does it cost to do a light painting?

Due to the time intensive process to bring your image to fruition, pricing for any piece starts at $750, depending on size and presentation.  This includes the time necessary for planning, scouting, photographing and digitally assembling the image. (Travel beyond 95 miles is billed accordingly.) The total time Kathryn invests on each light painting project is abut 8-20 hours. The photo shoot fee does not include printed or electronic images.

What do I need to do at the photo shoot?

You are invited to observe the photo shoot. Most clients enjoy just watching the light painting process, which can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the subject. Seeing and participating in the session helps to promote a deeper appreciation of the beauty of your light painted image.

When will I see the initial image?

The preview image is typically ready to view within 7-10 working days of the photo shoot. The printed versions you choose after seeing the finished image should be delivered within 4-6 weeks for a simple installation.
